Resilience

Al O'Toole

This year was the first ANZAC Day without my Dad. He was a tower of strength and wisdom throughout my life, and because of him ANZAC Day holds a special place in my heart, with cherished memories of him donning his Navy jacket adorned with RAF medals. He was my role model for resilience, and through me, I hope his spirit of resilience lives on.

Reflecting on my father’s journey, I’ve been thinking of the lessons in resilience he taught me, that guide me through my career and personal challenges. Summarised, I’ve been thinking of the 5 Cs: :

1. Commitment: Wholehearted dedication and unwavering effort.
2. Control: Understanding what is within my power, particularly my mindset.
3. Challenge: Recognising that adversities are temporary, and addressing them
to them to build inner strength.
4. Connection: Embracing a supportive work, social and family network for
solace and strength during tough times.
5. Confidence: Believing in my capacity to navigate obstacles, adapt, and
pursue my goals.

My father’s tales of ‘mateship’ and camaraderie in the RAF underscored the importance of unity and purpose in resilience. His legacy inspires me to build my mental fortitude and face life’s trials with unwavering determination. As I honour my Dad, Al O’Toole, I invite you to reflect: Who has influenced your journey towards resilience and mental fortitude?

Let us pay homage to those who shape our resilience and fortify our spirits amidst life’s challenges. Lest we forget.
